I would like to announce my candidacy for the office of councillor in Nelson’s upcoming municipal elections, happening Saturday, November 15th, 2014.
Three years ago, my wife and I decided we wanted to move our two young boys from Vancouver to Nelson. And just over two years ago, we made it happen.
With its dynamite downtown, incredible natural beauty, vibrant culture, laid-back feel, and a healthy streak of frontier exceptionalism, Nelson was the obvious choice for our family. So I quit my job as a producer with CBC Radio 3, loaded up the car, and we made our way to the heart of the Kootenays.
Since our arrival, I’ve built a career as a freelance writer and media consultant, and I’ve thrown myself into projects that I believe enhance our community and economy. I joined Nelson’s Advisory Planning Commission and Cultural Development Committee. I’ve volunteered with the Civic Theatre and Kootenay Co-op Radio with their marketing, communications, and social media. I joined the Elves to help light up Baker Street. And I run the unofficial Nelson Facebook page and started the Keep Nelson Weird Facebook page, both of which have allowed me to support organizations and individuals working to make Nelson a great place to live, as well as foster discussion around important issues we all face.
But I’d like to do more, and I think I’m ready to work for you on council.
I believe that Nelson is one of the best places to live in Canada, but it’s not without its share of problems. Housing affordability, an ever-changing economy, sustainable development, and community engagement are challenges that require creative solutions we can all get behind.
To find those solutions, we need a council that not only brings ideas to the table, but knows how to listen to those of the community. In the coming months, I’ll be sharing my ideas — and hopefully hearing yours, so please stay tuned! To stay in touch, please follow me on Twitter or like me on Facebook.
